Brockton Historical Society to give shoe collection to Stonehill College

The shoe collection at the Brockton Historical Society got the boot, as the society’s trustees voted to turn the collection over to Stonehill College for better preservation.

A rotating selection of the shoes will still be on display in the museum, but the rest will be kept in the climate-controlled facilities of the Stonehill College archives department.

The society has a large collection of old and notable shoes. Currently they are housed in the basement of the society’s museum on Pearl Street. The museum is not climate-controlled however, which leads to deterioration of the leather.

There is also a problem with mice in the basement, which leads to half-eaten shoes.

“Not only did Brockton have the absolute best-made shoe in the country, but the best tasting,” joked trustee Larry Siskind at the society’s annual meeting last week.specials air max shoes

Outgoing President Jim Benson has long been in favor of the move.

When Richard Polk started the Pedestrian Shops 40 years ago, he sold just one kind of shoe -- the Earth Shoe.

Over the decades, Polk has seen every kind of shoe movement come -- and often go. The latest, the minimal or "barefoot" shoe movement, has been spreading like an Arizona wildfire in the past year and shows no signs of slowing.

However, at least one local expert says the trend contributes to injury when too many miles are put on too soon.

Polk said "barefoot shoes" -- the term seems to be interchangeable with "minimalist" -- are not for everyone, and some runners and pedestrians need other kinds of shoes. But those who can wear these thin-soled shoes are often effusive in their praise.

Typical was Trusha Agashi, a college student from Ohio State visiting Boulder for a week.

"I love them!" she said of her Five Fingers. "At first I hated them because my calves hurt. I wish someone would tell us not to wear them more than a half-mile at first."

Blogger Lynn Mahoney calls herself the "maven of savin'." Her blog digs deep into daily deal sites like Eversave, Groupon and Living Social. But in spite of the great savings, Mahoney's readers admit they hide purchases from their partners.

One reader's email said, "Hello ladies: Guilty! I hid new shoes in the trunk and a sweater in my briefcase this week."

Another wrote "I hide things in my closet all the time."

"A lot of my readers feel guilty because of the economy," said Mahoney. "They don't feel guilty spending money on children, the household or the husband, but they feel guilty about spending money on themselves."
